Benzodiazepines are a class of medication that are considered minor tranquilizers. This is because the drugs “down regulate” the central nervous system (CNS) to eliminate CNS activity that causes serious health conditions, particularly clinical anxiety and certain seizure disorders.
Despite being viewed as a safe alternative to barbiturates, many of which are considered major tranquilizers that have a high risk for overdose, the efficacy of benzodiazepines — and the side effects that result from their administration — should not be underestimated. With this in mind, below are five types of essential prescription medication labels for all types of benzodiazepines.
- May Cause Drowsiness Labels
Due to their down regulation of the CNS, many benzodiazepines have a profound sedating effect, especially early in the course of treatment. Even when a benzodiazepines is administered at bedtime, the drowsy effect can linger well into the next day, as some of the medications have a half-life that exceeds 24-30 hours. Patients should be apprised of this common reaction.
- May Cause Dizziness Labels
Some benzodiazepines, such as clonazepam and valium, take several minutes to deliver the therapeutic effect; while other medications in the class, such as alprazolam and lorazepam, are formulated to deliver strong effects shortly after dosing. When a patient uses a high dose of a short-acting benzodiazepine, the may experience dizziness as the drug quickly takes effect.
- Do Not Use Machinery Labels
Because benzodiazepines cause many patients to experience temporary drowsiness and short-term dizziness, safety dictates that they should be made aware of the danger of operating machinery before they know how their medication will affect them. For the sake of brevity, this information can be presented on may cause drowsiness labels and may cause dizziness labels.
- Avoid Using Alcohol Labels
Because alcohol depresses the CNS by stimulating the body’s GABA system in a manner this is similar to the way benzodiazepines stimulate it, it should not be consumed with benzodiazepines. Doing so can cause the substances to have a synergistic effect that depresses the CNS to the point where autonomic activity such as breathing and heart beat are heavily suppressed or cease altogether, resulting in a comatose state or death.
- Do Not Discontinue Labels
Some medications can be discontinued without the patient experiencing a withdrawal syndrome, but benzodiazepines are not one of them — at least not for a significant percentage of patients that take the drugs long-term. Abrupt cessation of benzodiazepines is widely known to cause long-term, troubling symptoms such as seizures, clinical anxiety, insomnia, and the list goes on.
