Four Drug Classes That Need “Double Check” Pharmacy Labels Stickers

pharmacy-label-stickersThere are many types of ready-made pharmacy label stickers, but one of the most common is the double check variety. Double check pharmacy labels stickers are adhesive labels that contain the words “double check” or some variation of them. Often printed on colored labels that quickly draw attention to the message, these labels can play a crucial role in reducing dispensing and dosing errors.

Double check labels are typically applied to pharmacy pill containers and/or prescription bottles that contain medication that is highly critical to take in the correct dosage due to profound, negative health outcomes that can occur if it is taken incorrectly. In this entry, we look at four classes of drugs that should ideally contain double check labels to help prevent overdosage.

  1. Barbiturates

Barbiturates are powerful central nervous system (CNS) depressants that are typically administered in hospital settings. However, short courses of barbiturates are still prescribed to patients on a limited basis. Even when the duration of dosing for barbiturates is short, applying double check labels to pharmacy containers and pill bottles that hold the medication should be done for at least one reason: The difference between a therapeutic dose and a fatal overdose can be exceptionally small, especially for patients who are “naive” to barbiturate medications.

  1. Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines are minor tranquilizers that function as CNS depressants. Due to their low risk for causing fatal overdose and their ability to depress the nervous system like barbiturates, benzodiazepines have largely replaced barbiturates as the medication of choice for suppressing CNS conditions that cause suffering, particularly clinical anxiety. Even so, the drugs can still have a deadly effect when they are administered with other CNS depressants. Therefore, the dosage amount for should be double checked by pharmacists and patients in this situation.

  1. Optiates

Opiates are primarily prescribed to combat serious, physical pain, particularly pain that results from nerve damage, lacerations, musculoskeletal conditions, and surgical procedures. Although opiates are highly effective for treating pain, they pose two critical issues from the physician’s standpoint: tolerance to the medications and the potential for fatal overdose. Double check pharmacy labels stickers help ensure that opiates are dispensed and dosed correctly to prevent patients from developing tolerance due to overmedication and dying as a result of overdose.

  1. Antipsychotics

Unlike the other drug classes in this list, antipsychotics rarely pose a danger when they are taken simultaneously with CNS depressants. However, double checking the dosage for an antipsychotic is still important. When they are administered in low doses, some antipsychotics have a sedative effect but not an antipsychotic effect. For a patient who suffers from a psychotic condition, taking the correct dose of an antipsychotic can prevent the need for hospitalization.
